Speculation started around 7pm that Embrace were maybe playing a secret gig somewhere in the Country. Their first gig for over 7 years, Were these speculations true? Hell yes. On this page will be peoples reactions and thoughts on the event.
Heard a rumour Embrace are playing a secret gig tonight - could be total rubbish. Anyone else heard anything about it?
If it is, it's a well kept secret.
It was a well kept secret. All the best things are worth keeping your mouth shut for. It was an amazing night. Many, many thanks to the band.
If you were one of the lucky ones who got invited to either of the very secret gigs then you are blessed. There will be a lot of disappointed people out there who didn't get the chance to go this time. Why not me I can hear. Rest assured, you will get a chance to see the band soon.
The gig on the first night was something rather special.
Hearing the unmistakable sound of Embrace once again was very emotional. Being so close to the band was unbelievable. It was like they had never been away.
Favourites like Fireworks, Ashes, All You Good Good People, Retread all sounded wonderful. The new songs were superb. Riks lead vocals on one song were mind blowing. Danny getting more and more confident with each song. Steve looking as cool as ever, doing what he does best on that beast of a bass guitar. Mickey was getting sounds out of that keyboard like not many can. His added backing vocals really standing out. Mike was smashing those drums like his life depended on it. Make sure you watch Mike during a gig. It is a show itself just watching him at work. I could watch the very talented Rik McNamara for ever. Everything he does is effortless. What a night, the memories will last for ever. For those who didn't go this time
Chins up people. Keep holding on your time will come. Embrace are back.
They played a great set including Retread, Nature's Law, Gravity, AYGGP, Someday, Keeping and more and SIX NEW ONES! x
I am the luckiest man in the world right now! x
It was an absolute joy to be there. The 'mystery tracks' suggest something special is on its way. Someday was awesome and it was great to hear Retread. Opening with Madeline meant Dry Kids compilation got a long overdue airing on the iPod last night!
Feel very, very lucky to have been there. There was a fantastic atmosphere, no pushing and shoving to the front, no dickheads, just a group of people happy to be involved and to have the honour of hearing those new songs first hand. I hadn't really thought much about the new album or what it might consist of but now that I've heard the new songs I'm very excited. They've gone in a direction that I've hoped they would for a long time. They've gone darker and heavier but also introduced more synth. Rick's vocals on one of the new songs completely blew me away, constant practice apparently. There were hints of Flaming Red Hair, Out of Nothing, Too Many Times etc but also glimmers of New Order/Radiohead. I can't wait to hear those songs again and I'm very excited about what the future holds for the band and the fans.
This must have been the most secret gig of all as there was usually a competition to won a place. Are Embrace so secret now that they are using the ' dark net' ?
I went. I'm led to believe invites were pulled from a hat. Of course I was delighted to be there but it was very difficult to keep this secret from friends who are also great Embrace fans. It was so secret I didn't know Splinter (who lives about 15 miles away) was going - we could have car shared instead of each driving 400 miles plus. We couldn't all be there - I think the band played to around 270 folk over the two nights and that did include their family members and friends. No audio or film to come of the gigs at the request of the band as they don't want people to hear the songs they've worked on so hard for the last seven years being recorded on a mobile.
Professional pics were taken last night - Mickey's said they'll be shared as soon as he and the band have worked out the best way to do so.
That's the thing innit. I was lucky. I know I was, it was special. And yeah I've been lucky to get to two other SGs but like most people id been trying for years. I wouldn't have gone to 17 if it were not for Lee who won the tickets. The band are really grateful for the strong fan base and I think they often go above and beyond for the fans.
They are/really keen to keep everyone excited and I'm dead confident they will truly do their best to do that.
Agreed. I have thought that from day one. They love and appreciate their fans and are happy to spend time with them. All except Danny were in the bar pre gig last night just mingling. And for us lucky few that were there this week, just shows how lovely and kind they all are. :)x
Keeping quiet about this has been torture. Massively impressed with the new stuff. Will write more later when I'm not at work!
It was at "The Hop" in Wakefield. Besty is part-owner I believe. I would estimate around 100 people or so. The room was pretty small (for Embrace anyway!) and pretty packed with friends and family. It really was a great night. Danny was having lots of banter with the crowd and instigated a Happy Birthday sing-a-long for Mike. You could tell the band were absolutely buzzing to be on stage again. It really was great. Danny said they had some great ideas for more secret gigs so expect something - hopefully soon x
it was a great night. I've woken up with Natures Law in my head. hearing new stuff for the first time live is an odd experience and in a very small setting it feels even odder but I've said on FB this... 234 were instant gratification tunes, I liked them right away. 6 is absolutely epic. and the other two I think will be growers. I really can't wait to hear them again.
The whole thing was amazing. As I said on FB - well worth the 7 year wait. Song number 3 was just fantastic, instantly hit a nerve and I can't wait to hear it again. Song number 6 was, like Glen said, absolutely epic - a brilliant closer to the gig. I love the fact that the style has changed a little for the new stuff and they've taken pointers from the likes of Flaming Red Hair etc... not just stuck with the old format (although we all obviously love that else we wouldn't be here...). I don't think there was a new song that I thought couldn't/wouldn't be a hit, they were all fantastic. So grateful that I could be there and I just can't wait for the Embrace wheels to get moving again.
On a personal note, I loved seeing you all there too.... Here's to more merriments in the (hopefully near?) future
It was so good to be there, had a great time, 1, 4 and six were amazing! Loved the old stuff as well, can't get Madelene out of my head. Great to see everyone again, just want more now!!So lucky to have been there
I was delighted to be one of the lucky ones whose names were pulled out of a hat for these tiny gigs. Chuffed to bits in fact. We were told the gigs were hush hush and to keep them a secret, no easy thing when a lot of friends I stay in touch with online were met through Embrace.
For those who don't know, the gigs were at the Hop in Wakefield and were played to around 130 on Tuesday and 140 on Wednesday. Wednesday night kicked off with Madeleine and from there on in it's all a bit of a blur, though I remember there were six new ones in there - the last one potentially being this album's 'Out of Nothing' and one where Richard knocked everyone's socks off with unexpected lead vocals on what I thought was 'new song number 3' -I remember Gravity, Retread, Someday, Looking as You Are, Fireworks (cue tears)and AYGGP.
My few photos are shit. There's no video clips as the band don't want people to have their first listen of new songs where the audio will have been recorded poorly on a mobile. That's fair enough (and as an aside - please don't post any clips from the gig otherwise they'll be taken down and Admin will come after you...).
The band are as tight as fook and sounded fantastic - right close to the front was too close to hear properly (thanks for the vanishing act Splinter) so I'd a listen from further away.
The lovely Mickey was in a chatty mood afterwards so I thought I'd share some of what's coming soon:
Secret gigs: Lots of them. In ridiculous settings. Both Danny and Mickey alluded to 'dark.'
Forthcoming Tour: The band won't be touring until the album is released.
The new album: When asked by a joyous crowd when it'd be released the answer was 'soon' (Mickey's said on facebook that only an idiot would release an album between now and Christmas) so I'm taking that to mean 2014.
No more 'pussy ballads': Don't worry, you've still got the old ones, it's just there aren't any new ones on the forthcoming album.
Spread the word, Embrace are back, there are new songs and they're ace. Thanks guys, much love to you all. x
It seemed to be the same set list both nights. Everyone seems to love the new ones but from the old ones - which was everyone's favourite? Nature's Law had me in tears. Bastards.
Retread I will never get bored of hearing and Mike's drumming on that was utterly brilliant. xx
Tweets about the gig.
Looking for #gigpictures on today's scrapbook after watching a secret Embrace gig last night. I'm too short for gigs I've decided!
Keep on searching for “embrace gig” on twitter for any little info I can find, proving fruitful. If a little sad on my behalf.
